Curated by Magda Sawon, this residency welcomes alumni from the New York Academy of Art as they explore the world of digital art. The partnership includes a speaker series, hosted by Voice, for all NYAA alumni.

A new kind of gallery
The future of art is digital
Blockchain technology has opened the door to a new market for artists and a new means for collectors to support the artists that they love. NFTs have allowed us to create a more sustainable financial model for these culture bearers of society. Collectors can now invest in artists holistically— by buying their physical and digital artworks.
We are creating a new kind of gallery.
Support the artists who move you, whose stories resound with you, whose art enriches your life.
ARTISTS

Viviane Silvera
@vivianesilvera
Viviane is an artist working at the intersection of animation, video installation, neuroscience, and painting. She is rigorously trained in both the visual and plastic arts. Her recent body of work is a video project that explores how memories define who we are, how we remember, and the inextricable link between memory and imagination. Her art is inspired by questions that arose when she examined her own memories of childhood. Born and raised in Honk Kong until the age of 10, she moved to Brazil for 5 years, and then came to NY at age 15. Memories from Hong Kong often feel out of reach, begging the question— if memories tell the story of how we became who we are, who are you if your memories are not within your grasp? As an artist and filmmaker, Viviane’s intention is to use her art to give voice to the universal experience of remembering. Her film combines art and science, giving a vivid and visceral experience of what it is to remember and be haunted as well as enriched by our memories.

Yun Jang
@posmodo
Yun is a Brooklyn based artist, originally from South Korea. His work is about visualizing feelings, desires, and thoughts both internally and externally. Internally, his work is made from memory about daily base subjects: thoughts, emotions, sensations. The external construction is about the process of painting— the dynamics of mediums, textures, colors, compositions, etc. When Yun is being present, the merging of external and internal processes becomes a performance that brings forth a hidden burden and forgotten part of himself. He calls this process a summoning, performed by himself as the shaman. His goal is that by the ritual of painting, he can deliver a creature built by his conscious and subconscious selves.

Brian Fencl
@fenclstudio
Brian is a visual artist and art professor. His art acts as a reminder of the ephemerality of life, encouraging the viewer to contemplate and savor the interesting moments. He creates artworks that are an observation and exploration of human vulnerabilities. Brian’s artworks demand that we confront the frightening yet unavoidable fact that the condition of our existence is transient. Making images helps him deal with his abstract feelings on the subject and the sensations and thoughts it triggers. His work is rooted in pop surrealist philosophies—everyday life, dreams and an understanding of history inform his creative voice.

Johanna Aenderl Ryan
@johannaaenderl
Johanna started her artistic path as a writer but she now works primarily with cyanotype, monotypes, and weaving. Her work is representational, created with a limited palette and organic mark making. Johanna uses her artistic practice to reflect upon our relationship with the non-human (aka natural) world—she utilizes found materials (natural dyes, food scraps) or natural processes (sunlight) to create her art. Spontaneity is an integral part of her process and also a necessary approach when dealing with organic materials. Her work rejects capitalist consumerism and holds close things that are undervalued in our culture: nature, hand making, ‘women’s work’/ the domestic. Her current body of work is driven by an anxiety that forces one to be in the present, and try to predict what lies ahead. It is imperfect and susceptible to flawed conclusions but it can also spur action and creative solutions. These are the contradictions and tensions within her work.

Julia Chen
@julart
Julia was born in Taipei, Taiwan but immigrated to the US with her family when she was thirteen. Both eastern and western cultures influence her works. She studied Chinese calligraphy for seven years under Dr. Leon Long-Yien Chang, a scholar and master in Chinese calligraphy where she developed appreciation for the subtlety and nuance of drawn lines and its expressiveness. Julia Chen is a very intuitive painter, believing that it’s not what you paint, but how you paint it that is most significant. Whatever is within will manifest itself on the canvas. She sees painting as a record of her stat of being at any given moment during its creation. Every artwork she makes is a slice of her life— not the outward appearance, but the invisible and impermanent.

Carlos Bautista
@los1001
Carlos has always felt the pulse of artistic creativity in his soul, though he initially fought against it due to cultural expectations put upon him as the first born child of immigrant parents. He was an analytical chemist and then a web developer until the thrum of creative energy became too strong to ignore. He threw himself into art— studying in Florence, attending the NYAA, and now serving as VP of alumni at NYAA. He strives to utilize his unique experiences to build the bridge between art and science. He now eats Photoshop for breakfast, 3D software for lunch, and Unity for dinner. With his laptop in tow he has declared himself a monk of digital art on a journey of ten thousand YouTube tutorials. His commitment has paid off, he now has a full Augmented Reality Project and is building experiences in virtual reality.

Sevil Kaynak
@sevilkaynak
Sevil is a multimedia artist and fashion designer from Istanbul. A woman of many mediums, Sevil is a painter, photographer, sculptor and has dabbled in stop motion animation. Her artwork reflects a deep interest in the human psyche and psychology, identity, sense of belonging, and childhood. She is inclined to paint uncanny scenes, odd objects. Often her paintings use figurative and surrealist elements to play with the viewer’s perspective and perception of space (indoor/outdoor, up/down). She seeks to capture uneasy feelings and explore magical realism and narrative imagination. Her artworks often inspire the artist to write short stories and create parallel written compositions.

Jacob Hicks
@jacobhicks
Jacob is an internationally exhibited Brooklyn-based oil painter and art educator. His paintings are a collage of cultural and personal history and symbolism. His current artworks center female icons in a series called 100 Women, which he began in 2016 as a form of resistance to misogyny. His portraits are divided into three categories: the art historical, the historical, and the personal. The art historical images depict mythological and unreal women referenced in Primitive Flemish, Italian Renaissance, and Spanish Baroque paintings. The historical portraits depict real cultural heroes like Toni Morrison and Erykah Badu. The personal portraits depict strong women in the artist’s immediate life. He decorates his heroes in imagined crowns and fabrics using color from biology and botany to express the holiness, nature and regality of each subject. He paints in a technique similar to Pre-Raphaelite painters, using indirect glazes from a white ground.
